Deck Restoration

How long should new wood weather prior to applying a stain or paint?
The best recommendation is that of the USDA’s Forest Products Laboratory. Let new wood weather 2-3 weeks, allowing the moisture content to lower with excessive exposure to the sun’s harmful ultra violet (UV) rays.

1. Inspect surface for stains, mildew, UV sunlight damage and other conditions.
2. Tighten loose nails or screws.
3. Pre-treat deck with appropriate cleaners, then power wash with light pressure and rinse thoroughly. Professional contractors avoid the use of bleach.
4. Neutralize wood to balance pH of the wood.
5. After wood has dried to less than 15% moisture content, seal with a professional grade (preferably oil-based) sealer.

Semi-transparent stains allow the wood grain to be visible.
Solid stains will last longer than semi-transparent stains.
Several shades and colors are available. Call for upgraded ideas.
